The younger brother of famed U-boat commander Manfred Buchmann, Johannes grew up involved with his family's wooden boat business, helping to build and repair anything from small sloops to schooners over 60 feet. His father urged both him and Manfred to join the navy, which he did in the early 1930's, transferring to the U-boat force a year after Manfred in 1937.
Johannes received navigational training at the U-boot-lehrdivision in Neustadt, naval artillery training at the Schiffartilerieschule in Kiel, flark artillery training at the Marineflugabwehrschule in Schweremünde, and torpedo training at the Torpedoschule in Flensburg-Mürwick.
Just before war broke out on September 1st, 1939, Johannes was sent to the 9th Flotille, attached to Wilhemshaven, to receive his first command, the U-5.
