Kommandant's Report U-330
Patrol #2
Duration: |
24.11.1939 - 28.11.1939, 5 days on sea |
We have heard a new sound of ASDIC, which I wanted to report. My L.I.
confidentially tells me that he has heard of a new unit (possibly a type
147) which can now determine depth, as well as range. If true, we must all
brace for additional problems when encountering escort ships. The sound is
much like fingernails over a comb, which is how one of the crew described
it. Please forward this to the appropriate officials for their review. Naturally,
I will be available for any questions on this topic that our leaders might
have.
I think this new ASDIC is responsible for determining our exact position
in the depths and placing the wasserbomben in front of our noses. It ws this
group of 5 which damaged the torpedo doors. Luckily, we had no eels remaining
by that time and there was little internal damage. Again, this new sound
must be investigated.
Next, except for the torpedo problems which seem to plague us, Patrol #2
went well. This constant missing or deep-running of these eels is using our
supply quickly with little results. Here, 6 eels brought down only 2 vessels,
which is a 30 percent kill rate (although another did cripple a tanker).
I should be bringing back 4 or more ships on each patrol with the Typ ll
C.
Additionally, I have been noticing a growing animosity between our Chief
Mechanic and our Chief Engineer. Perhaps this was the end result of 2
back-to-back patrols with little time for rest. I will watch the situation
for developments. Several bouts of finger pointing have occurred, but I am
downplaying this in the hopes it works out by itself.
Nothing further to report.
