Kommandant's Report U-330
Patrol #3

Duration:     20.12.1939 - 07.01.1940, 19 days on sea

This third patrol went well for us. The damage on the 2nd patrol gave the mechanics some job as they literally replaced an entire bow. Still notice a slight pull to starboard when rudders indicate zero position and have talked to the mechanic regarding it.
AN14 proved to be almost devoid of shipping. Except for the 20,000 tonner we sunk, we saw nothing else the entire time. AN22 was much more active and I respectfully request assignment to that area once again, if possible.

Next, I felt it necessary to send a false radio signal back to the troop ship, fearing reprisal from possible nearby escorts. We were lucky to have been in perfect firing position and I did not want to press that luck with destroyers ranging their ASDIC’s at us. Although personally disgusting in nature, I felt it was the best course of action to take, given the circumstances. I accept full responsibility for any repercussions that might ensue.

Also, I am still having small problems between my LI and Chief Mechanic. Although keeping somewhat in check, the finger-pointing is beginning to escalate with verbal barbs being thrown at each other, mostly out of hearing distance of the men. I am keeping this in close check, but feel that an occasional outpour is good for their relief valves. No action is to be taken at this time.

No damage was obtained on this particular operation and both myself and my LI feel that only a routine post-patrol maintenance check will be necessary prior to our next patrol.

Lastly, my deepest gratitude for the presentation of the Knights Cross to me at the docks in Brest. My crew, family and country will all share in my pride of this medal.

Kommandant’s Report Respectfully Signed and Submitted this Date: 7 Jan, 1940.
